Magic at The Kinfolk Dinner

I stumbled across the beautiful Kinfolk Magazine after emerging from a 12 month sabbatical called motherhood. It was so refreshing to find something that celebrated the everyday and the simple act of getting loved ones together to enjoy a meal. But what's really inspired me are the beautiful events and workshops they host in cities around the world that have included everything from flower arranging, pickling, honey harvesting and herbal infusions to dinners, a butchers block party and camp fire cooking. This is where fans like me can experience all that Kinfolk stands for while meeting like minded individuals.

With Co-founder Katie Searle Williams and Community Manager Julie Pointer in Australia recently, I was delighted to be able to attend the very first Australian Kinfolk Dinner Series held in their honour at the stunning Glenmore House. It was the largest dinner they have ever hosted and with 70 people sitting down to eat together at one long table, it made for a truly magical night.

Getting my watercolour on

When I was younger, I would while away the afternoon painting mauve sunsets and orange tinged landscapes using watercolours so you can imagine my excitement when I discovered The School was running a Watercolour 101 class in Sydney. I jumped at the chance of rediscovering my love of watercolour and it gave me the perfect excuse to try another creative venture. It was a beginners class for adults and kids so was perfect for me and illustrated the fact that one anyone can master this medium. It was fun to dabble in colour and try out various methods of painting and although I may not have produced a masterpiece, it made me realise how much I enjoy (and miss) painting.

At the Kinfolk Table

I have long admired the ethos behind Kinfolk magazine and was excited to finally attend one of their Sydney events. The Kinfolk Table lunch hosted by the lovely Lisa Madigan and Natalie Hayllar (Eat, Read, Love) was held in the beautiful garden of Lisa’s country cottage in the Kangaroo Valley and was exactly as I imagined it. An abundance of delicious food from the team at Mario’s Kitchen, complemented by glasses of refreshing wine and calming gourmet teas were all styled to Kinfolk perfection and made for a delightful afternoon. It was a photographers dream and a fun way to spend a Saturday afternoon. I’m definitely looking forward to the next Kinfolk event in Sydney.

Living a more creative life. Starting now.

For as long as I can remember, I have loved being creative. From painting and pottery to B&W photography and paper craft,  there was always something I was doing to get my creative juices flowing. And then it suddenly stopped. Probably around the time I started working full time and as much as I tried to continue, inevitably my creative mojo disappeared. Until now. I’ve made a pact to start living a more creative life. Starting now.

First up was a Kikki K DIY workshop which gave me some cute and clever ideas for gorgeous ways to wrap gifts, make sweet handmade cards and beautiful memory keeping ideas. It was just what I needed to get excited about all the creative possibilities that lie ahead and meant I spent up big in the paper wonderland that is Kikki K!

Next up was pushing myself out of my comfort zone with a Blog Society and Lulu Lucky Modern Calligraphy class. I had never written with a fountain pen let alone a calligraphy pen so  found it really challenging at first to write in that style with a pen and ink but once I let go of my fear of failure and stopped trying to 'write' the words, I found it much easier. It's more like drawing so once I got my head around that, I just went with the flow (pardon the pun). Now I just have to practice, practice, practice.
